Plymouth

Nestled along the river mouths of Plym and Tamar, Plymouth stands tall over one of the natural harbours of Europe. This sprawling seafaring city flaunts an impressive maritime past and was the bastion of the English Royal Navy bases during World War II; and still holds the title of having the largest naval base in the Western Europe. Plymouth suffered widespread damage during the bombardment of 1941 and was refurbished by the famous architect, Patrick Abercrombie. Plymouth is a treasure trove of various historical houses such as Preston house – the oldest in Plymouth, while the Merchant's House would tell you more about its impressive past as a trading city. The city Museum and art gallery is a must- visit for culture vultures. Travel back in time at the Barbican Maritime Village, an erstwhile seafaring village. Amble along the cobbled allay ways to explore the footprints of some of the celebrated navigators such as Captain Drake and Raleigh as you ransack the many quaint shops and galleries where you can pick up native craft and arts.The Island House and Plymouth Gin Distillery are also equally popular among visitors.

The Elizabethan house built in 1584 surrounded by an enchanting garden would trigger nostalgic thoughts about the Pilgrim Father ancestors who set sail in 1620 from Mayflower. Palaces like Saltram House famous for its enormous Great Kitchen and the former home of Sir Francis Drake of Buckland Abbey are also worth exploring.

The nature aficionados can explore the postcard country side settings along with the Cremyll foot ferry and the parkland of Mount Edgcumbe. You can chug along the Tamar valley or cruise across the river to enjoy the most stunning sunsets of all times. The adventure parks at Dobwalls or Woodlands are great for adrenalin freaks.
