Newquay is the fishing port on the north Atlantic coast of Pydarshire, Cornhill in . It is bounded in the west by the River Gannel and its associated salt marsh and in the east by the Porth Valley. Towards south the town has been expanding inland ever since it was founded.
This town has long been known for its historical significance. There are many historic landmarks which still retains the glory of the past. The first sign of settlement in Newquay includes the late Iron Age hill fort or industrial centre. The occupation of the site took its beginning right from the 3rd to 6th century AD. There are some Iron Age burial mounds and an embankment on the area now known as the Barrow Fields. A Bronze Age Village was found at Trethellan Farm, a beautiful site that overlooks the River Gannel, in 1987.
This town is now a major tourist destination with its huge wealth of 10 long and accessible sandy beaches. The Newquay harbour and the surrounding sea sides offer excellent scope for surfing activities. ‘Run to the Sun’ a famous event conducted in Newquay at Trevelgue Holiday Park, during the public holiday on the last weekend in May. Hoards of tourist both within and from outside the town participates in the event, a beautiful view of the custom cars parade is a real treat to watch. The 630 mile long South-West coast path runs through the town and is considered as a unique feature of this town.
Owing to its location in the centre of the ’s surf industry the visitors can see a high concentration of surf shops, board manufacturers and hire shops in the town.
The Fistral Beach is in the centre of surfing reputation and it is one of the best beach breaks available in Cornwall. This beach is capable of producing powerful, hollow waves and holding a good sized swell that convert the surfing experience here as an unforgettable one with lot of thrills and joy. With a perfect ambiance and facilities available for surfing, Nowquay has gained a reputation of hosting major international surfing competitions for over 20 years. This town also provides base for legendary big wave sport called the Cribbar. This sport is more adventurous and enthusiasts from all over the world gather here to participate in this event, which demands lots of courage and physical strength.
Other prominent beaches of the region are Towan, Great Western and Tolcarne beaches, which are located very near the town centre and the Crantock Bay and Watergate Bay also provide high quality holiday breaks. Nightlife in Newquay is lively in nature. There are many famous nightclubs which employ many internationally well known DJs who play thumping numbers that makes you shake the body as according to the rocking music. During summer season the city is filled with tourists mainly for the purpose of celebrating Hen Weekend and Stag weekend parties.
The Newquay railway station, airport and well connected road links makes the town easily accessible one. There are a wide range of hotels, which take care of the accommodation needs of the tourists. |
