Chester-le-street

Chester-le-Street, nestled along the river Wear is famous for its many Roman relics such as the Front Street and the tomb of St. Cuthbert, of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne who was laid to rest before building a permanent shrine in Durham. This city is also home to Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the most important manuscripts which led to the development of Christianity in the British Isles.

It is a bustling city with many gardens, museums and palaces in addition to a pumping night life and an exciting shopping destination. From an erstwhile coal mining town it has long evolved to be a fast growing dormitory town. It is easily one of the most famous shopping towns in the whole of Durham and has many shops and indoor market places to cater to the discerning customers. In addition there are golf courses and county cricket clubs that flaunt the sporty façade of this city. It is an ideal destination where you can make your stag and hen weekend partying special. From the biggest dirt bowls to some of the greatest trails it offers a power packed vacation of all times.

You can take a tram ride to steal a bird’s view of the city, visit Anker’s museum, touted as one of the smallest museums in UK, sneak peek into the countless period shops and the well kept gardens at Pockerley Manor; not forgetting the great engine shed and the awesome recreation of the steam locomotive of Puffing Billy, which traces its origin to 1813!!

It has a loud and garish night life and there are umpteen pubs and betting bars and poker games to add spice to any night owls’ itinerary; however fist fights and street brawls are also not uncommon. Last but not least, do not miss out the red bricked arch, which serves a s a display board for the upcoming events of this city; but it is more of a poster sticking canvas these days!
