Falkirk


 Falkirk is the historic town located in the central Scotland. The well-known cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are its neighbours. Being located in the Central of Scotland this bustling town enjoys the privilege of well connected motor and rail links to and fro from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Even before the Roman period the town played a significant role in the history of Scotland, the Antonine Wall built between the Firths of Clyde and Forth is the typical example for this. The glorious period of the Roman occupation is still preserved in Falkirk.

The place has witnessed two remarkable battles one in 1298 during which King Edward I beat William Wallace thereby converting under the English rule and the other battle took place in 1746 when the Jacobites led by Bonnie Prince Charlie stormed the Stirling Castle. It is believed that name of the town originated from the church named Faw-kirk that was built in medieval period. The people of the town built houses around the church that converted it into a town and by 1550 Falkirk gained recognition as a market town.

Owing to its historical background the town displays enormous scope for numerous historic legacy of artefacts collection brilliantly kept for display in the famous museums like the Callander House, Kinneil Museum and Grangemouth Museum that are maintained by the Falkirk Museum Service. The Callander house flaunts a living history production named the "William Forbes’s Falkirk" that draws huge crowd for its wide collection ranges from the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie to the dawn of the railway. For those interested in collecting coins will be delighted to see the vast collection of Roman coins at the Kinneil Museum and can gain more knowledge about the early planned towns in at the Grangemouth museum.

It boasts many activity areas for children like the Bouncy Castle and Crazy Golf. The well renowned Falkirk Wheel adds more attraction to the town and is considered as the awesome sight of the 21st century. The rotating boat lift of Falkirk Wheel is the one of its kind in the world, it is built to connect the Clyde and the Firth of Forth and Firth of Clyde and the Union Canal. The tourists can admire the boat trip and in the visitor centre they see the gigantic wheel in action, the wheel is capable of lifting more than eight boats at a time.

The prominent among the historic sites available in Falkirk are the remains of the rampart and ditch of the Roman built Antonine’s Wall as their northern boundary of their empire. Falkirk is one of the prominent shopping destinations in Central Scotland with its array of speciality stores, many branded shops in the Mall and Callander Square located on the High Street. Other than enjoying the time shopping the tourist can also enjoy the variety of dishes offered by the finest restaurants and eateries spread across the region. During the International Food Festival conducted in July the restaurants in the town will show off their finest dishes.
